Stephen Furlani

It was extremely difficult for me to narrow down my musical tastes to three genres, let alone just three songs. So what is presented below is just three songs that I think are perfect. They aren’t necessarily my favorite songs, or even exemplary songs from each category. Just three songs that I think are perfect in and of themselves.

Song: Nuvole Bianche
Artist: Ludovico Einaudi
Released: 2004

Translated from a southern italian dialect as “White Clouds,” this piano solo exemplifies what I love most about classical music: the ability to paint a picture using only sound. Einaudi gives the piece an incredible amount of emotion from the swells to the silent places. In my mind the song tells the story of someone who continuously reaches out for greatness, only to have it disappear into the blue sky like a whispering white cloud. The repetitive melody is reminiscent of someone who tries and tries again but cannot succeed. The swells of the song represent each attempt at greatness only to be swallowed up by silence so loud you can hear the movement of the pedals of the piano. It’s an emotional journey that leaves me torn each time I hear it, and that’s why I think this song is perfect.

Song: Blinding Lights
Artist: The Weeknd
Released: 2020

The Weeknd has a perfect voice. That alone makes this song worthy of being in this list, but the sound creation and production quality of this track is insane. He has definitely learned a lot from his partnerships with Daft Punk, and every sound in this song feels like it was handcrafted for each moment. To be successful, a Pop Song needs to have a lot of different qualities: it should at least be singable, danceable, memorable, topical, and produced at the highest quality. This song has all of those qualities, and that’s why I think this song is perfect.

Song: The Wizard
Artist: Damon Jones
Released: 2011

So this song is… different. Which is an understatement, but it’s perfect in different ways than the other two songs on my list. Instead of being excellent in a musical sense, it’s place on this list is derived from it’s ideological composition. The seriousness and level of production that went into the song and the music video are just incredible. Unlike the other two on the list, this song must be listened to along with the music video to be enjoyed to its fullest. This song makes me smile on the inside no matter how many times I watch it, and that’s why I think this song is perfect.
