My first song choice is Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Song: Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Artist: Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
Year: 1993
The lyrics and melody come to me unbidden as if on the ether like a spirit moving me to whistle, hum, and sing it all the time, for years I have done so.
My second choice is Paul Desmond’s Take Five. It, like my equally-popular third choice, Pachelbel’s Canon in D, I never tire of listening to in almost any rendition.
Song: Take Five
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet (written by Paul Desmond)
Year: 1959
Song: Canon in D Major
Artist: Johann Pachelbel (performed by Kanon Orchestre de Chambre)
Year: 1680-1706 (performed 2009)
The reason, if I think about it, may be the consummately sensual nature of both compositions. From lullaby-like repeating melodies with harmonics they both build with titillating rhythms to euphoric orgasmic crescendos. Ahhh.
